Her Family Moves to Edison, New Jersey in 1951

By around 1951, five-year-old Susan found herself uprooted from Jackson Heights, Queens, as the Tomalin family settled into suburban Edison, New Jersey — a world away from New York City. With nine children to accommodate, her parents needed the extra room, and life there revolved around school, church, and family. As the eldest, Susan took on the role of caretaker for her younger siblings, and this upbringing in a large, faith-driven household instilled in her a foundation of discipline and education that would define her early years.
